…by Yehuda Amichai

Amichai was the most famous Israeli poet of his generation, and I love this poem because it warns us against the dangers of religious and political ‘certainty’, which it contrasts with the ‘doubts and loves’ that enable the soul to flourish.

Richard Holloway is a Scottish writer and broadcaster and was formerly Bishop of Edinburgh in the Scottish Episcopal Church. He was guest director of the Edinburgh International Book Festival in 2009.
