This year Holy Rood High School has been selected as Edinburgh’s poetry school.

We are lucky to have a range of activities in store, including talks and workshops on creative writing, and a visit from the famous performance poet John Hegley.

The theme this year is “Carrying a Poem” – can you think of any lines of poetry, lyrics from your favourite songs or even quotes from books or films that you particularly like or are moved by?

As well as poems other people have written, why not think about writing your poetry? There’s no firm rules – it doesn’t need to be fancy, it doesn’t need to rhyme (although there’s nothing wrong if it does!) – it doesn’t even need to be in formal English – you could try Scots or just try arranging a conversation into verse.

Click on the links below to see some poems by some of Holy Rood’s young poets. Some go to the Poetry Club on Monday lunchtimes in Ms Jameson’s classroom, so feel free to come along if you want to.
